Only this time, they got me looking at old RWD Toyota sedans intead of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . I started looking at Chasers and Mark IIs, but somehow ended up finding this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Kinja'd!!!

It's a 1991 with 83,000 kms, and is only $5,580. This isn't quite what MCM was up to with their Mark II, but I still like it. I don't think I'd have the heart to turn it into an all out drift machine.

However, I do wonder what it would be like with a 1UZ and 5-speed swap. And maybe just a bit lower...

It already has the 1UZ.

The Century never had the 1UZ. The first generation Century had the Toyota V engine in its various forms, which was the predecessor to the UZ engine. Since this one is a '91, it has the 5V-EU, which only produces 190 hp and 238 ft-lb of torque. Not a lot of power for a vehicle that ways around 4,000 pounds.

Ah, TIL. It's more power than I have at 3900 lbs.

The V engine was never supposed to have impressive numbers. It was designed exclusively for Toyotas flagship limousine and tuned for good low end torque and a wide torque curve. Those 190hp and 238ft-lb were plenty for cruising, and I can assure you that nobody ever bought a Century to drive it quickly. Besides, even today there are cars with worse power-to-weight ratios.

Is this the same as the Crown? If so, that would be a great car to have. Good price too.

That is a fair point. I guess I was looking at it more as a fairly inexpensive rwd platform that could be played with a bit, rather than what it was originally intended for.

You never know; somebody, somewhere might eventually purchase a Century with the intention of driving it quickly ;)

Sort of. The Century was based on and replaced the Crown Eight. The Century is a good deal bigger, and around 1,000 pounds heavier.

The price gets even better, too. I ended up finding a 1992 long wheel base version for only $2,700. It does have ~102,000 miles, but that should be nothing for a Toyota.

The fairly inexpensive RWD platform that people can play with would be the Comfort.

If there are stanced and slammed Centurys...

If that was a taxi, that a lot of start and stop, especially in Japan. However being from Japan, that car is probably in near mint condition.

The Comfort just seems to lack the style of the Century. Also, I believe the Centuries I've been looking at will be US Legal sooner, too.

It seems like high mileage compared to most of the others I've found, but the pictures seem to show that it's in pretty good condition. Of course, the pictures don't tell the full story, but I don't think that would scare me too much.

The 1st gen Century is another one of those Mini/Defender type of vehicles, no one can tell if it's an 84 or a 97, so it'll probably get crushed.

Weren't those guys getting into trouble because they were doing VIN swapping of some sort?

At any rate, all of the 1st gens will be legal by the time I'd seriously consider one anyway.
